Director of Telecommunications: Hired as the senior East Coast Corporate telecommunications executive to organize and restructure the worldwide telecommunications systems Deployment Group and the internal telecommunications department of the McLean campus and improve the competency, cohesiveness and professionalism of these organizations. Responsibilities included:

  • Managing the Company's voice and wireless telecommunications hardware Deployment Group responsible for implementing telephone, voicemail, wireless voice and data capabilities and structured cabling system platforms and services on a worldwide basis. The group implemented approximately 75 systems per year representing $3 million in new acquisitions, upgrades and redeployments annually.
  • Directing the activities of the McLean regional Telecommunications Department responsible for all voice related telecommunications services supporting the National Capital Region locations. Responsibilities included directing technical and administrative staff and managing the Department's $4.5M operating budget.
  • Directing the Company's infrastructure cabling activities including a 3-year, $4M project to rewire 8,500 cable locations. This project included a full competitive bidding procurement phase, the design and construction of 55 telecommunications closets for ten buildings.
  • Serving as the Department's chief technology consultant, offering support services to senior management in all areas of telecommunications technology.
  • Received a highly selective executive compensation bonus award given annually to less than 1% of employees worldwide shown to demonstrate top-level proficiency and leadership.

Director, Telecommunications Services Group: Recruited to direct the Company's telecommunications consulting practice. The practice provided various telecommunications consulting services to its primarily healthcare client base including assessments, procurements, managed implementations and organizational staffing plans. The group specialized in PBX systems, intelligent console systems, telemanagement systems, cabling infrastructures, wireless systems and call center technologies as well as wide area network designs, procurements and implementations.

USA TODAY and Gannett Company, Inc., Arlington, VA

Gannett Co., Inc. is the country's largest newspaper group. Including USA TODAY, the company's 74 daily newspapers have a combined daily paid circulation of more than 6.7 million. The company also owns and operates 21 television stations, a news service and commercial offset printing operations.

Director of Telecommunications: Originally hired as a Telecommunications Engineer for a start up newspaper eventually named USA TODAY and then promoted to Systems Manager, Applications Manager and ultimately to Director. As Director I managed the selection and implementation of telecommunications equipment and services for corporate headquarters and the print, broadcast, cable television, security, news and media operations nationwide. Core equipment competencies included PBX, voicemail, automated telemarketing, interactive voice response, alphanumeric backbone paging, video teleconferencing, microwave, satellite, and conventional two-way radio systems. 1997 Capital budget was $7 million dollars. Additional responsibilities included:

  • Provided engineering support for two-way radio, point-to-point microwave and satellite earth station installations. Negotiated roof rights and tower rentals from both customer and owner perspectives. Initiated frequency interference, arc clearance, path profile and radiation hazard studies.
  • Directed the selection, implementation, and operation of the Company's 200 site dual virtual private networks. Regular installations and renegotiations resulted in a $5M savings to the company in network costs.
  • Directed the Company's Telecommunications Department which was responsible for supporting the Gannett and USA TODAY corporate headquarters and field locations with equipment installations, local carrier and VPN billing, financial allocations (HQ), moves, adds and changes (HQ), and site audits.
  • Developed corporate telecommunications policies and procedures as they related to the selection, implementation and use of products and services that were selected to meet needs, reduce costs and conform to regulations.
  • Analyzed new developments in telecommunications technology and deployed those which were strategically important to the Company's Basic Game Plan.
  • Prepared, submitted, reviewed and negotiated capital and expense budgets.
  • Performed as the Department's spokesperson.
  • Co-Chaired the company's Emergency Group that was established to plan for business continuance and recovery following a disaster to its headquarters operation.

Telecommunications Manager: Retained to manage the installation, cutover and operation of an InteCom IBX S/80 for the Technology Center Headquarters. System spanned four buildings across two states and networked analog, digital, and fiber services together to provide a homogeneous communications capability previously unavailable. Additional accomplishments included:

  • Merged the company's Ethernet LAN's with the InteCom to permit installation of network printers on twisted pair cable that was switched through the PBX. This was the first successful integration of the kind known to 3Com.
  • Obtained Defense Intelligence Agency approval for the installation of a single Type Accepted telephone system to be used by both classified and unclassified work in the same facility. This was the first successful bid of the kind by Booz Allen to the Agency.
  • Managed the voice and data network operations for the Technology Center headquarters and field offices. This included new installations and upgrades to accommodate growth and prevent technical obsolescence.

mindSHIFT Technologies is a leading provider of subscription based computing services offering complete computing and support infrastructures for its small and mid-size business customers.

Vice-President, Infrastructure: Lead member of the start-up team that conceptualized and defined the preliminary product offerings. Managed the core engineering team through the initial design and implementation concepts that leveraged leading edge wireless and IP services technologies. Built and managed the company's first Customer Care organization that included the design and deployment of its CTI enabled call center systems. Defined, built and managed the initial internal IT organization responsible for defining and installing the company's core Clarify CRM system and other business infrastructures including telecommunications systems. Established the company's first Network Access Center and negotiated and turned-up the company's initial wide area network. Additional areas of responsibility included:

  • The Field Services organization responsible for deploying and maintaining all aspects of the customer solution including developing and managing strategic vendor partnerships.
